IC-706MKII vs IC-706MKIIG

Key differences

From the outside they are almost the same: the same body, the same detachable panel and the same 100 W on HF and 6 m. The real differences are on VHF/UHF and in the built-in features:

  • 70 cm: only the MKIIG has it (20 W). The MKII has no UHF at all.
  • 2 m power: MKIIG 50 W, MKII 20 W.
  • DSP: the MKIIG has noise reduction (NR) and auto notch (ANF); the MKII does not.
  • Tone squelch: built into the MKIIG; the MKII needs the optional UT-86 to decode CTCSS.
  • Memories: MKIIG 107, MKII 102.

Which one to buy? If you mostly work HF and price matters, a healthy MKII is a good choice. If you want FM repeaters, 70 cm or noise reduction, the MKIIG is worth the difference.
